DEFINING MOMENTS

When working life asks something different of us.

Some moments change more than our responsibilities. They change what is needed from us — how we think, how we lead and how we contribute.

Defining Moments explores those recognisable turning points through short reflections and questions that invite you to see your own experience differently.

You don’t need to have read the book to find something here that resonates with you.

DEFINING MOMENT 01

The first time you choose not to give the answer

You’ve been promoted because you're good at what you do. People trust your expertise. They come to you because you know how to solve the problem.

Then one day, someone brings you a question you know you could answer. But you realise that answering it yourself might not be the most helpful thing you could do.

Your first instinct may be to find the answer quickly. After all, that's what you've always been good at.

But what if this is the moment to try something different?

Instead of finding the answer yourself, you might help the other person explore what they know, what they need to find out and what they could do next.

The shift isn't about having fewer answers. It's about recognising when giving an answer helps and when creating space for someone else's thinking helps them develop their own judgement.

A question to take away: When someone next comes to you for an answer, what could you ask that would help them think it through?

What has been a defining moment for you?

Perhaps you've taken on a new responsibility, questioned an established way of working or realised that the way you've always done something needs to change.

I'd love to hear about the moments that have shaped how you work, lead and develop.
